Penina Golf - Sir Henry Cotton

The first golf course ever in the Algarve.

This is the first course ever to be built in the Algarve, completed in 1966 and designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton. The Penina is unquestionably where golf started in this southern corner of Europe. This championship course remains unmatched. The average golfer will find it offers almost everything they ever dreamed about or wanted from a game of golf. The entire Resort has gained recognition by and is a member of a sanctuary system, dedicated to the protection of wildlife. With also a driving range, practice chipping, putting and bunker facilities, this is the perfect golf resort.

Following his original instincts, Sir Henry Cotton conceived a layout, which would - after the introduction of literally thousands of trees and bushes - become transformed to the lush vegetation it is today. It is a 18 hole course, mostly plain and surrounded by mature and lush trees and bushes. The course is characterised by an unusual grouping of the par-5. As you turn home up the 18th, the magnificent building of the Hotel acts as a backdrop to the green framed to the nearby amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tees, while the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of bunkers.

After you´re game you´ll be ready for a cool refreshment. Here at the resort you´ll find 2 bars and 4 restaurants to cater to all your needs. The restaurants serve a wide variety of dishes from your typical delicious local cuisine to an international selection. One of the restaurants is a quaint little Italian pizzeria.
