Costa Calida (warm sultry coast) info

Tucked away in the South East corner of Spain is the Spanish coastal province of Murcia. With more than 300 days of sunshine, it is little wonder that its 156 miles of coastline is called Costa Calida, meaning Warm Coast.

The Costa Calida as a holiday destination
Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar are wetland areas that are temporary homes to a host of wading birds including pink flamingos. Travelling south, we take in the famous Lo Pagan, a town renowned for its medicinal mud baths. Mar Menor or "Small Sea" is a shallow lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a thin strip of land called La Manga del Mar Menor. It is a favourite with people learning water sports because of its sheltered environment. La Manga has most recently become famous for its golf complexes, frequented by premier league football players.

The Costa Calida climate
Here you will enjoy a typical subtropical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The Costa Calida averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees. It is neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average the Costa Calida boasts 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year round destination.

The Costa Calida coastline
The Costa Calida has just over 170 km of coastline: coves and small beaches alternate with rocky shores and sheer, craggy cliffs. On the horizon you’ll see oleanders, prickly pears and wild dwarf palms; the cry of the seagulls and the buzzing of the cicada are sometimes the only sounds that break the luminous atmosphere of the exquisite Costa Calida.

Lorca is steeped in history and featured in many battles between the Christians and the Moors. Its castle has a living history tour is very well presented and definitely worth a visit.
