Bavaria Bavaria (German: Bayern) is a State (Bundesland) of Germany. The territory of this state is the largest of the 16 German states. The state capital is Munich with 1.3 million people. About 12.5 million people live in Bavaria. Like many German states, Bavaria was once independent. Ludwig II of Bavaria was its last independent king.

Bavaria has seven parts: Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria), Niederbayern (Lower Bavaria), Schwaben (Swabia), Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), Unterfranken (Lower Franconia), Oberfranken (Upper Franconia) and Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate). Bavaria has 71 districts and 25 free cities.

The highest point is the Zugspitze, which is also the highest mountain in Germany. Munich is the largest city, the second biggest city is Nuremberg (Nürnberg), which is famous for its gingerbread, a kind of Christmas bread that is often shaped like a Christmas tree, a snowman or Santa Claus.

Pope Benedict XVI was born in Bavaria.

Sankt Wolfgang Golf Uttlau

As did the German golf course architect Kurt Rossknecht when he had the privilege of drawing 18 holes into this Bavarian picture book landscape.

The course, which was harmoniously integrated into the terrain, is based on his designs and, although demanding, is suitable for players of all skill levels. It features two 9-hole loops leading over a ridge, ascending fairways with occasional inclines, elevated greens and long shots into the valley which alternate with level fairways where the golfers need to hit across water to reach the large, undulating greens.

Apart from the sporting challenge posed by some of the holes, the St. Wolfgang Golf Course Uttlau also impresses with beautiful views: the village of Uttlau remains in view with its lovingly restored 400-year-old estate, whose interior accommodates Bavaria’s perhaps most beautiful “19th hole”.

Due to the distinct terrain profile, the sporting highlights of the interesting but fair golf course are found on the last 9 holes. The 10th hole leads all the way up to the highest point of the course, where, after completing the par 3 of 150 metres across a depression, the players tee off into the valley below from an elevated tee at the 12th hole. Approaching the green on this par 5, which is well protected by water hazards, requires utmost precision.

The 15th hole, an elongated dogleg left hole leading across a ridge to a green in a depression, is equally demanding. The final hole, too, packs a punch: the third shot of this par 5 leads to a small green protected by water – right into the village, where refreshments and snacks await the players at the estate beer garden.
